Why Do I Always Underestimate How Much I've Eaten?

Almost everyone does it, and it isn’t a sign you’re dishonest or a signal of a lack of discipline. Research using objective measurement methods has repeatedly found that people’s own estimates of what they’ve eaten run lower than what they actually ate, often by more than most people would guess.

Is it normal to underestimate how much you’ve eaten?
Yes, and it’s been shown consistently enough across independent studies that this part isn’t seriously in question. A review pulling together studies that compared what people reported eating against objective measures of their energy use found a consistent pattern, most people’s reported intake sits below what they actually consumed, across very different countries, ages, and lifestyles.
A later systematic review of 37 separate studies looked specifically at 24-hour recall interviews and written food records (both estimated and carefully weighed), and found broadly the same pattern across all three: on average, people underestimated their true intake by somewhere around 15%, and roughly 3 in 10 participants underreported by a large enough margin to be classed as substantial under-reporters.
That review is now well over a decade old, but its core pattern is one we didn’t find seriously overturned in more recent research. It’s also worth mentioning that the “objective” side of the comparison isn’t a perfect yardstick either, the measurement methods researchers use as ground truth are far more precise than personal recall, but naturally they will also carry their own small margins of error.
How big can the gap actually get?
One of the clearest and most extreme demonstrations of this came from a very specific group. Ten people who were genuinely stuck, reporting eating under 1200 calories a day yet not losing weight, referred to researchers because something wasn’t adding up. This wasn’t a broad or representative sample, it was a small, self-selected clinical group, which matters for how far this exact number should be generalised. Even accounting for that, what the researchers found was striking. Measuring the group’s actual energy use directly, they reported eating about 1,028 calories a day on average, while the actual number was around 2,081. To be clear, most people’s underreporting looks nowhere near this extreme, but it demonstrates how large the gap can get in specific cases.
The same research also tested recall directly, feeding participants a meal and asking them to describe it from memory a day later, and found people remembered eating meaningfully less than they actually had. That pointed to memory, not dishonesty, as a real part of the mechanism. If you’re genuinely eating very little for a sustained period and not seeing any change, a memory-based explanation can be plausible, but it’s also worth ruling things out with a doctor rather than assuming it’s only ever a logging issue.
Is this about being overweight, or something else entirely?
For a long time the assumption was that underreporting was mainly a pattern seen in people carrying more weight, and some research does support a link like that. A 2022 study pushed back on it, using a 221-person subsample of a UK national diet survey who’d completed the kind of detailed testing described above (not a nationally representative sample in itself, but drawn from one). It found that once you account for how much energy someone actually needs day to day, body size on its own didn’t explain the gap as cleanly as earlier work assumed. What tracked more closely with bigger underreporting in that study was simply eating more, being more physically active, or being younger, all of which mean more food moving through a day. This is a genuinely unsettled question rather than a resolved one, older and newer research don’t fully agree, but it’s at least a reason not to assume this is only about any one body type.
Does this matter if you’re trying to gain weight rather than lose it?
Most of the research above comes from people trying to eat less, since that’s where doctors first noticed the mismatch. There isn’t a dedicated study on people deliberately trying to eat more, but the mechanism itself, memory struggling to keep up with a full day of eating, has no obvious reason to only apply in one direction. If anything, eating more to hit a surplus means more food to recall accurately, not less, so there’s little reason to assume this problem disappears just because the goal has flipped.
What this actually means for you
If a measurement problem this well documented affects most people trying to track their food, holding yourself to a “perfectly accurate log” isn’t a realistic bar, and it was never really the point.
