Weighing and the scale

The scale gives you one number a day, and it is noisier than it looks. Most of what moves overnight is water. These guides cover what the research says about weighing yourself, how often is worth doing, and what your options are if the number itself is the problem.

Weighing tends to get talked about in absolutes. It is either essential or it is toxic, depending who you ask. The research is less dramatic than either camp. Regular weighing helps a lot of people, and for some people it costs more than it gives.

The second group is the one we think about most. A number that ruins your morning is not neutral feedback, whatever it does for the average. That is why Ori has a Look Away mode: the reading goes into the app, you never see it, and the trend still gets worked out in the background.

The guides below go through the evidence properly, from what makes weight swing overnight to whether daily weighing is a good idea, how often is enough, and which scales and apps let you skip the number.

These are general guides rather than advice for your situation. Our health disclaimer explains what we do and do not cover.
