What Is NEAT and Why Does It Change Without You Noticing?

NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis, this is the calories you burn from everything that isn’t sleeping, eating, or a structured workout (fidgeting, standing up, pacing while on the phone, taking the stairs). Research shows this can shift by hundreds of calories a day depending on how much you’re eating, without you ever consciously deciding to move more or less, and it moves in both directions, whether you’re trying to lose weight or gain it.

What exactly counts as NEAT?
NEAT is a real physiological category, not a wellness buzzword. The researchers who formalized the term describe it as the energy that goes into fidgeting, maintaining posture, and the other ordinary physical activity of daily life. Basically everything short of sleeping, eating, and deliberate exercise. It’s the stuff nobody logs, shifting your weight while you queue, tapping a foot under a desk, taking the long way to the printer.
Why does it drop when you’re eating less?
A 2009 trial from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, run as part of the CALERIE research program, put 48 overweight adults into different six-month plans: a calorie-restricted group, a low-calorie-diet group, a group that combined a smaller calorie cut with structured exercise, and a control group. Looking at the two calorie-cutting groups together, everyday physical activity (measured as total energy use adjusted for how much energy the body burns at rest) was significantly lower than it had been at the start, both three and six months in. The control group and the group that added structured exercise alongside a smaller calorie cut didn’t show that same pattern at either point. With only 48 people split across four groups, this is a modest-sized trial, worth keeping in mind alongside the finding.
Nobody in that study was told to move less, and everyone in it was classed as overweight going in, so this study may not describe everyone equally. Still, the researchers frame it as a behavioral adaptation happening on top of a separate metabolic one, e.g., your body quietly dialing down the unconscious background movement of an ordinary day once it’s consistently taking in less fuel.
Why does it rise when you’re eating more?
The clearest demonstration of this effect runs the other way. In a small, tightly controlled 1999 study, just 16 people who weren’t overweight were deliberately fed 1,000 calories a day above what they needed to maintain their weight, for eight weeks under close medical supervision, with their exercise levels checked and held constant throughout. Two-thirds of the resulting increase in their total daily energy use came from NEAT specifically, not from structured exercise, which didn’t change. How much each person’s NEAT increased varied hugely, from someone who actually moved slightly less (-98 kcal/day) to someone whose NEAT rose by 692 kcal/day, and that difference was strongly correlated with who stored the extra calories as fat and who mostly didn’t (the study’s own statistic, a correlation of 0.77 out of a possible 1.0).
To put it simply, in this small study, two people overfed the exact same amount stored very different amounts of fat, and how much each person’s unconscious movement increased was the strongest single factor the researchers found linked to that difference.
Why don’t you notice this happening?
Because none of it runs through anything you’d recognize as a decision. Both studies above describe the same category of movement, fidgeting, posture, restlessness, that isn’t something you consciously ramp up or wind down. It’s a background process, which is exactly why it doesn’t show up if you’re only paying attention to what you deliberately did that day, like a workout or a step count you set out to hit.
Does this mean tracking steps is pointless?
Not quite! It points somewhere more specific, though this sits inside a genuinely unresolved debate among researchers. In the 2009 trial above, the group that added structured exercise on top of a smaller calorie cut was the one group (alongside control) that didn’t show the drop in everyday activity that the calorie-cutting-only groups did. That’s one small trial, not a guarantee for everyone, and a separate large 2016 study, comparing over 300 adults across five populations, found that total daily energy use only rises with physical activity up to a point, then plateaus at higher activity levels, as though the body works to hold overall energy use within a fairly narrow range rather than simply adding exercise on top of everything else. So take this as a hint that deliberate movement might help preserve your everyday activity level during a cut, and not as a settled formula for cancelling the effect out entirely.
What this actually means for you
If your day-to-day movement has quietly dropped off while you’re eating less, or you’ve noticed you’re more restless and active than usual while eating more, neither is a personal shift you imagined or a discipline problem. It’s a documented, involuntary response, and it’s part of why the same calorie target can stop working for you even when nothing about your effort has changed.
